The marquise cut - with its long, football-like shape and pointed ends - is all about presence. It's one of the most distinctive diamond cuts, and it's designed to make your finger look longer, like a built-in optial illusion. 
It was first made in the 1700s for Louis XV, inspired by the shape of his queen's smile - and it's still one of the most romantic cuts today. It's not as common as a round cut or oval cut, so it stands out without trying to hard.

Even though it's elongated, it's surprisingly brilliant. With 56 to 58 facets, it handles light almost as well as a round cut - so it sparkles from every angle, not just face-up.
